San Carlos Borromeo Cathedral

old san carlos church

This was the first structure built in 1891 by the Augustinian Recollect fathers as the house of God. The first priests only had 1,100 catholic converts that time but their faith in God’s help did not falter. Padre Pedro Chivete de la Immaculada Concepcion and the other recollect fathers continued with their quest to gather as much converts as possible coming from all parts of Nabingkalan (the old name of San Carlos City)

This Gothic, Byzantine and Romanesque designed cathedral was constructed in 1935. It was not a miracle when the number of christian converts went up to 30,000 because of the dedication of the recollects. They also realized that the church must be improved thus the reason for the reconstruction. It was not an easy struggle especially with the monetary part but the new church finally emerged and inaugurated on November 4, 1935. It became a Diocese on February 10, 1998 covering the municipality of Manapla down to La Libertad, Negros Oriental.
